Zoo Animal of the Year 2026 – ProCon Grumbach is taking part!

The Crowned Crane is the ‘Zoo Animal of the Year’ for 2026 – We support the conservation of this species

With a wingspan of up to two metres, the crowned crane is one of Africa’s most impressive bird species. It lives south of the Sahara and is not only an important part of the natural world, but is also deeply rooted in the cultures of many countries. In Uganda, it features on the national flag as a symbol of progress and peace; in other regions, it represents good fortune and prosperity.

The crowned crane also plays a significant ecological role: as a skilled hunter of locusts, it helps to limit damage to crops and thus safeguard livelihoods.

Furthermore, it is a key factor in nature-based tourism, thereby supporting local communities.

Despite its importance, the population of the grey crowned crane (Balearica regulorum) has declined sharply in recent decades – by around 80% over the past 50 years. The main causes are habitat loss, the destruction of wetlands, the use of chemicals in agriculture, and human interference such as hunting or collisions with power lines. In some regions of Africa, populations are now critically endangered.

The ‘Zoo Animal of the Year’ 2026 initiative therefore sends an important signal by putting the crowned crane in the spotlight and supporting targeted species conservation measures. Together with dedicated local project partners, concrete measures are being implemented.
